Onono Opens a Japanese-Style Convenience Store in Kazakhstan
The Tokyo-based company expands beyond Mongolia, bringing Japanese snacks, instant noodles and matcha lattes to Astana.

A Japanese-style convenience store called Onono opened in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital, on October 3, 2026, marking the second overseas market for Tokyo-based Onono Corporation.
The store stocks 136 products, including Black Thunder chocolate bars, Morinaga’s DARS chocolates, Menbei crackers, Sapporo Ichiban instant noodles and Ito En’s Oi Ocha green tea. An adjoining café serves matcha lattes.
About 500 people attended the opening event, with more than 300 purchases recorded, according to the company.
Onono first ventured overseas in September 2025, opening a store in Mongolia. The company plans to expand its presence in Kazakhstan, with additional locations expected across the country.
The stores serve a purpose beyond retail. Onono intends to use them to gauge local demand for Japanese products, collecting consumer data that could help manufacturers enter new markets.
The company also sees Kazakhstan as a base for further expansion into Central Asia and neighboring regions.
